Construction Projects in the Maldives
The Maldives, in the full Republic of Maldives, also called the Maldive Islands, an independent island country in the north-central Indian Ocean. It consists of a chain of about 1,200 small coral islands and sandbanks (some 200 of which are inhabited), grouped in clusters, or atolls.
The islands extend more than 510 miles (820 km) from north to south and 80 miles (130 km) from east to west. The northernmost atoll is about 370 miles (600 km) south-southwest of the Indian mainland, and the central area, including the capital island of Male (Male’), is about 400 miles (645 km) southwest of Sri Lanka.
The Maldivian economy is based on tourism and fishing. Tourism, Maldives' largest industry, accounts for 28% of GDP and more than 60% of the Maldives' foreign exchange receipts. Over 90% of government tax revenue comes from import duties and tourism-related taxes. Fishing is the second leading sector. Agriculture and manufacturing play a minor role, constrained by limited cultivable land and shortage of domestic labor. Fish is the largest export, while petroleum products, ships, foodstuffs, clothing, and capital goods are the main imports. Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Great Britain, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are the major trading partners.
In 2020, there are 166 operating Resorts in all Maldivian Archipelago. Almost a dozen new resorts are opening each year! North Male Atoll and South Male Atoll have no more Islands for Resort leases. Most of Sri Lankan, Indian, Malaysian, and Singapore companies are managing constructions in these resort projects, and most of the European investors engaged in these projects.
